He busied himself with the sail. “Take the tiller,” he told her. “Point it straight ahead.”

Maya did as he asked. “Aye-aye, sir.” She put as much sarcasm as possible into her voice.

The sails filled with wind, and the little boat picked up speed. A gust pulled at Maya’s hair, and a tiny lock escaped to whip across her cheek.

“There’s only room for one captain on a boat,” Damnam said. “And that’s me. You can be first mate.”

There was something wrong with that in Maya’s mind, but it was Damnam’s boat, he knew how to sail it, and the sea was his element. She decided not to argue for the moment. Quarrelling with him was too much fun.

“Thanks.”

He smiled a wide smile at her and sat by the sails. “That’s the right attitude.”

Maya snorted. “I’m doing all the work.” She hung onto the tiller, checking the sea ahead of them and the empty waves for potential obstacles. Thank goodness there’re no other boats around. I know I’d crash into one. Still, boats are better than cars. I hate cars.
